China — Climate TRACE & Super-Emitters Tracking
Facts & Timeline
-
Climate TRACE is a global coalition launched in 2020, backed by Al Gore and over 100 partner organizations. It uses satellite data, AI, and remote sensing to track greenhouse gas emissions almost in real time.

In its 2023 report, Climate TRACE mapped emissions at over 352 million assets worldwide, including power plants, steel mills, cement factories, and oil fields.

China, the world’s largest emitter, was shown to have many of the top “super-emitters”, especially coal-fired power stations and steel plants. The data revealed higher emissions than officially reported in some sectors.

Current Situation
China has pledged to peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. Yet Climate TRACE data shows that many Chinese facilities continue to operate at very high intensity, sometimes under-reported in national statistics. (Reuters)
For example, coal plants in Inner Mongolia and Shanxi are among the largest single-site emitters in the world, pumping out millions of tons of CO₂ annually. Steel and cement industries — vital to China’s construction boom — also rank among the highest emitters globally.
By identifying these “super-emitters” through independent monitoring, Climate TRACE undercuts the problem of self-reported, delayed, or opaque government data.

Motivations & Analysis
-
Transparency gap: Traditional emissions reporting relies on national submissions, which can lag years and sometimes omit entire categories. Climate TRACE makes that data visible almost in real time.
-
Global accountability: By spotlighting super-emitters in China (and elsewhere), Climate TRACE arms policymakers, NGOs, and communities with tools to push for change.
-
China’s dilemma: Economic growth depends on coal, steel, and cement — but international pressure and domestic pollution concerns force gradual shifts.
-
Enforcement leverage: With satellites watching, “plausible deniability” weakens. Hidden flaring, coal use, or industrial surges can’t stay concealed.
Scriptural Perspective & Hope
Technology like satellites is showing what was hidden — echoing the Bible’s words: “There is nothing hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing secret that will not become known.” (Luke 8:17)
But the Bible also goes further. Revelation 11:18 warns that God will “bring to ruin those ruining the earth.” Those who exploit creation without regard for human health or justice will face accountability far greater than any human tribunal.
For those weary of smog, climate disruption, and unchecked emissions, God promises a future where the planet is healed. “They will not harm nor destroy in all my holy mountain.” (Isaiah 11:9) Under His Kingdom, the earth will be safe, breathable, and flourishing for all.
