The news can be hard to bear.
Another tragedy flashes across the screen — a shooting, a violent cult, an act of terrorism.
It can make the world feel unpredictable and unsafe.
Many ask, “Why does God allow this?” or “Is there any way out of this madness?”

The Bible gives context — and comfort — for what we see today.
Jesus himself foretold that our generation would experience a wave of fear and unrest.
He said:
📖 “There will be great earthquakes, and in one place after another food shortages and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights.” — Luke 21:11

The Gospel Witnesses and What They Saw

The prophecy Jesus spoke that day is recorded in three of the four GospelsMatthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21.
Each of these accounts reflects the writer’s perspective and audience, yet all describe the same conversation — a detailed forecast of world events leading to Christ’s return in Kingdom power.

While John’s Gospel does not include this specific conversation, he would have been familiar with it through the other apostles. His record focuses more on Jesus’ personal counsel and final prayers on the night before his death.
Together, the four accounts give us a rich, complete view of Jesus’ message — one that blends warning with deep reassurance.

What Prompted Jesus’ Prophecy

In Matthew’s record, the setting becomes vivid.
As Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives overlooking Jerusalem, his disciples asked:

📖 “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your presence and of the conclusion of the system of things?” — Matthew 24:3

They wanted to understand when he would begin ruling as King — when his invisible presence and authority would begin bringing lasting change.
Jesus’ reply was not meant to frighten, but to prepare and reassure. He listed the very conditions we now see — wars, food shortages, and “fearful sights.” These were to be signs that his Kingdom had come to power in heaven, and that the time was drawing close when that same rule would extend “on earth.”

Hope in the Midst of Fear

After describing these distressing events, Jesus added words meant to lift our eyes above the chaos:

📖 “As these things start to occur, stand up straight and lift up your heads, because your deliverance is getting near.” — Luke 21:28

So when terrifying incidents dominate the headlines, remember — these are not signs of God’s absence but of His nearness.
They prove that this flawed human system is nearing its end, and that Jehovah’s righteous Kingdom is preparing to restore peace across the earth.

In that new world, no one will live in fear or wake to tragic news.

“They will not learn war anymore.” — Isaiah 2:4

Until then, keep standing tall in faith.
Because even amid the uncertainty, Jehovah’s promise remains sure:
Deliverance is near.
