Coping with Shifting Seasons
Sometimes, loss isn’t about an event—it’s about a shifting season of life. Retirement, children leaving home, or even aging can make a person wonder, What am I here for now?
The Bible acknowledges that life moves in rhythms:
📖 “There is an appointed time for everything, a time for every activity under the heavens.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1
Every stage has its joys and challenges. What once defined us may fade, but that does not mean life has lost meaning. Jehovah God provides ways to find fresh purpose in each season—through learning, sharing wisdom, and drawing closer to Him.
Jesus pointed to the deepest form of purpose:
📖 This means everlasting life, their coming to know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.” — John 17:3
Purpose is not bound to productivity or youth. True happiness comes from spiritual depth:
📖 “Happy are those conscious of their spiritual need.” — Matthew 5:3
📖 “But as for me, drawing near to God is good for me.” — Psalm 73:28
Even if former roles shift, a relationship with Jehovah God gives identity, direction, and enduring meaning that no season of life can take away.
Am I Losing My Identity?
When life pulls us into new environments, there’s often pressure to reshape our identity. Cultures change, expectations shift, and even names can be redefined. That was exactly what happened to Daniel and his friends when they were taken from Judah into Babylon.
The account in Daniel chapter 1 shows how complete the attempt at transformation was:
-
They were given new names to erase their heritage (Daniel became Belteshazzar; Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah became Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego).
-
They were trained in “the writing and the language of the Chaldeans,” essentially being schooled to think and live like Babylonians.
-
They were assigned food and wine from the king’s own table — delicacies that almost certainly violated Jehovah God’s Law.
In every respect, these young men could have lost their identity. But Daniel made a heart-level resolution: “he would not defile himself with the king’s delicacies or with the wine he drank.” (Daniel 1:8)
That single choice set the course. Even when the official feared punishment if Daniel’s group looked weaker, Daniel suggested a simple test — ten days of vegetables and water. The result? Their appearance was healthier, their minds clearer, and they earned respect. More than that, Jehovah gave them knowledge and insight into every kind of writing and wisdom, and Daniel in particular was granted understanding in visions and dreams. (Daniel 1:17)
Lesson for Us
We might be pressed to adjust, compromise, or even take on labels that don’t fit us. But like Daniel, we don’t lose our identity when we love what Jehovah loves and hate what he hates. In fact, that’s when our true identity is sharpened — because Jehovah God strengthens us with gifts, insights, and opportunities that make us more uniquely useful than ever before.
So, instead of diluting who we are, obedience allows Jehovah to multiply our talents. Our identity doesn’t shrink under pressure; it expands under His guidance.
