In ancient times, women were often viewed as secondary or unimportant. Yet Jehovah God’s dealings with Sarah show that He saw her as more than Abraham’s wife—He saw her as a valued partner in His promise. God renamed her “Sarah,” meaning Princess, and promised that “kings of peoples” would come from her (Genesis 17:15,16). This elevated her dignity and showed that her role in the outworking of His purpose was essential.
Later, when Sarah urged Abraham to dismiss Hagar and Ishmael, Abraham was distressed. But Jehovah told him: “Listen to her voice” (Genesis 21:12). By commanding Abraham to heed Sarah, Jehovah God revealed that her perspective mattered. She was not invisible to Him.
This account teaches us that women’s voices are not to be silenced or dismissed. Jehovah blesses women with dignity and expects their counsel to be respected. When we face prejudice, we can remember that the God of the universe honors women and listens to them.
