Prejudice against women has existed for centuries, often leaving them overlooked, undervalued, or silenced. Yet Jehovah God never saw women as inferior. He honored their faith, gave them responsibilities, and recorded their courage in the Scriptures for all time. His Word shows that women have always held a precious place in His purpose.
Three comforting truths for women who face prejudice:
- Jehovah God blesses and listens to women. He renamed Sarai “Sarah,” meaning “Princess,” and told Abraham to listen to her voice of wisdom (Genesis 17:15,16; 21:12).
- Women have been leaders and sources of wisdom. Deborah, a prophetess and judge, guided the people of Israel and was sought out for counsel (Judges 4:4,5).
- Women have played vital roles in saving God’s people. Esther found favor with a king and bravely spoke up to deliver her nation (Esther 8:3-5,8,11).
A capable wife (originally designed by God to complement her husband – Genesis 22:18,22,23) was viewed as more beautiful and valuable than precious gemstones (Proverbs 31:10) and women who told of the good news of a winning battle were viewed like a large army – radiating hope to their neighbors and praise to God who enabled the victory (Psalm 68:11).
Yes, Jehovah God treasures women as daughters, sisters, and mothers within His extended family, that is – His congregation. The Scriptures urge us to treat older women as mothers and younger ones as sisters, “with all chastity” (1 Timothy 5:1,2). In His eyes, women are honored and deeply loved, no matter what prejudice may exist in the world.
